January 10, 2013 (Henrietta, NY) ─ Mix yeast, flour and water with memories, pour them into a pan and bake. The resulting fresh baked loaves of breads warmed Woodcrest Commons residents’ hearts and bellies during a visit from Rochester’s “bread man” Chet Fery in early-January. Fery of Brockport shared recipes and “Bread Time Stories,” memories of baking and giving away more than 10,000 loaves of bread in his lifetime.

When Fery isn’t baking and handing out loaves to people at the public market, he’s giving community presentations on the benefits of random acts of kindness. Residents reminisced, with one recalling how her mother would wake every morning at 4 a.m. before she went to work to bake bread, while another resident shared his fond memories of making challah bread with his grandmother on Saturdays, said Woodcrest Activities Director Lindsay Lown.
