Celebrating Russia (Glenwell)
February 5, 2013 (Cheektowaga, NY) ─ The handcrafted Russian flags decorating the dining room at Glenwell served as the perfect backdrop for a performance by Bandurist Bogdan Shutka, a senior at Lancaster High School. Bogdan, a part-time receptionist at Glenwell, a DePaul Senior Living Community, performed for seniors as part of a Russian Day Celebration on January 16.
The bandura is a Ukrainian stringed instrument similar to a lute. It typically has 30 to 68 strings.
Residents submersed themselves in sights, sounds and flavors of Eastern Europe culture, creating Russian flags and enjoying Prussian pork cutlets and a decadently layered Charlotte Russe confection for lunch, and beef stroganoff for dinner, complete with a Ukrainian dessert delicacy created by Bogdan’s mother Olga Shutka, a Care Aide at Glenwell. Bodgan’s father Dmytro is maintenance director at Glenwell.
Activities Director Scott Wieser said the entire day was a resounding success.
“The residents enjoy it when we do different ethnic themes and the staff enjoys sharing their talents as well,” said Wieser.
