Love withstands the test of time (Twelve Oaks)
February 25, 2013 (Mt. Airy, NC) ─ Through sickness and health, good times and bad, and even dementia, Twelve Oaks residents Barbara and Randall Norris have proven that love can withstand the test of time. Formerly from Pine Ridge, the couple has been married for 60 years. They were recently voted king and queen by residents and staff at Twelve Oaks, a DePaul Senior Living Community. Barbara has lived at Twelve Oaks for nine months and Randall has been a resident for seven months.
“Randall follows Barbara where she goes,” said Activities Director Mylynda Joyce. “He took care of her when they were still at home and he tries to do the same here.”
Randall and Barbara were crowned king and queen of the memory care unit at Twelve Oaks during the senior community’s recent Valentine’s Day celebration. Karren Baker and Jim Moore were chosen as the king and queen in the assisted living unit at Twelve Oaks. Joyce said Jim’s father Hurley Moore, a former Twelve Oaks resident who has since passed away, was selected as Valentine’s Day king back in 1995. The kings and queens are selected by resident and staff votes.
Joyce said many residents and family members turned out for the Valentine’s Day celebration which included cake, punch and games. Entertainment included blue grass gospel by God’s Joyful Heirs, a group of retired seniors who perform in the Mt. Airy area.
