For the love of Dyngus Day (Glenwell)
April 8, 2013 (Cheektowaga, NY) ─ Residents of Glenwell, a DePaul Senior Living Community, are keeping the tradition of Dyngus Day alive. Celebrated in traditional Polish neighborhoods since the 1870s, the tradition was revived in Buffalo in 1961 and has been going strong every since.
While Buffalonians enjoyed revelries, music and a parade during the 7th annual Dyngus Day celebration on April 1st, residents at Glenwell followed suit. Armed with squirt bottles and pussy willows, male and female residents carried out the Dyngus Day tradition of chasing one another in a gesture of affection.
Pictured above, Glenwell residents Gertrude Wyrzanowski taps Leonard Pearson with a pussy willow in traditional Dyngus Day-fashion, and Activities Director Scott Wieser prepares to spray resident Victoria Romans with a squirt bottle.
Glenwell residents Irmgard Pamer and Angeline Cruver enjoy dancing to Norm Kaminski who provided polkas, upbeat and traditional melodies on the accordion for the senior living community’s Dyngus Day celebration.
