Never too Young to Lend a Hand (Westwood Commons)
April 24, 2013 (North Chili, NY) ─ Once a month, the Ziegler’s, a group of five brothers from Ogden, spend time playing games with residents at Westwood Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Chili. Brothers Jared, Cameron, Joshua and twins David and Daniel range in age from 15 to 8-years-old.
National Volunteer Recognition Week, April 21 to 27, is a chance to give thanks for the community members who dedicate time doing things like making crafts and playing games with residents. Volunteers come in all ages and from all walks of life.
The boys’ mother Christine Ziegler began seeking a place for her sons to volunteer about four years ago.
“I wanted them to learn how to serve,” she said.
The residents actually helped her youngest three sons learn math and their ABC’s and her sons have gained confidence and a comfort level with seniors citizens.
“It’s kind of a win-win situation,” said Christine. “We have formed some wonderful relationships and my boys really look forward to it.”
“The residents are waiting for the Ziegler brothers when they arrive,” said Activities Director Cathy Toney. “The truly love these young men.”
Cameron, 13, said he really enjoys meeting new people and playing games with residents.
“Afterwards it feels good just helping people out and doing good life stuff,” he said.
