Senior Ball Splendor (Horizons)

June 6, 2013 (Canandaigua, NY) ─ The disco ball glimmered in the spotlight, bubbles filled the air and a live four-piece orchestra laid the soundtrack as residents and students from the Canandaigua Academy’s KEY Club ushered in the Big Band-era at Horizons. Dance cards were full during Horizon’s first-ever Senior Ball held May 22 at the DePaul Senior Living Community.

Champagne and sparkling cider were on tap as desserts, hors d’oeuvres and small boxes of butter mints adorned with the letter “H” were offered to attendees.

Residents, students and staff all donned their finest attire and one member of the KEY Club even saved his tuxedo from his Senior Prom the previous weekend for the occasion.

“The smiles, the laughter and interaction with the young adults were the highlight,” said Activities Director Curt Sanger. “The event would not have been as successful without them.”

Members of the Canandaigua Academy KEY Club, a Kiwanis International High School Program, have been volunteering at Horizons for about three years, according to Advisor Gail Kass-Smith. They’ve spent time with residents during the holiday season and delivered homemade Christmas cards. The Horizons Senior Ball was one of the club’s most attended events this year, said Kass-Smith.

“It gives the club members the opportunity to give back in a way they wouldn’t be able to give back otherwise,” she said. “They can go out and make a donation to a charity, but to be able to go and dance with someone ─ to really have made their night like that ─ that was really awesome.”
