Volunteers in the Spotlight (Wexford House)
June 11, 2013 (Denver, NC) ─ Wexford House is grateful for the dedication of its many volunteers who provide residents with everything from church services to manicures and an ear to listen. In April, the DePaul Senior Living Community in Denver recognized its volunteers. Among them are Bob Wright of Lincolnton who has been volunteering at Wexford House for 11 years and Peggy Lackey of Denver who has been sharing her time with residents for seven years.
Videos with Bob
What began as a hobby with videography has now turned into a calling. Bob Wright of Lincolnton has been recording services at Boger City Baptist Church and sharing it with Wexford House residents every Tuesday for the past 11 years. It all started when Bob began recording the services for members of the church who were unable to attend services in 1999.
Wright said he video tapes the Wednesday night and Sunday morning and evening services and makes about 15 copies to share with church members and Wexford House residents
After Wright visits Wexford House on Tuesday mornings, he heads over to Heath House, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Lincolnton.
“It gives them an opportunity to continue their spiritual growth,” said Wright. “I just love to see the residents’ reactions to the church services. They’re very appreciative and if someone gets too loud, they get ‘shushed’.”
Nails with Peggy
Seven years ago Peggy Lackey, a member of Denver United Methodist Church, spotted an ad in the church bulletin seeking volunteers to provide manicure services to residents of Wexford House. Although she had never done nails professionally, Lackey decided to give it a try.
Lackey provides manicures and hand massages every Tuesday morning at Wexford House, as well as Manly Nails for male residents on the fourth Tuesday of every month. She brings her own supplies which she is able to purchase with the help of a network of “angels.” Armed with her colorful nail polish supply featuring fun names like “The Devil Made Me Do It,” “Dutch Tullips,” “I Don’t Do Windows” and “You’re a Piece of Work,” Lackey spends time reminiscing with and learning from residents while trimming and buffing their nails and massaging their hands.
“I just absolutely love the people there,” she said. “I really feel like I’m helping. It’s a total blessing. I get back a lot more than I give.”
