From the Mouth of a Survivor (Hickory Village Memory Care)
October 16, 2013 (Hickory, NC) ─ Brenda Putnam, a cancer survivor with the Catawba County Breast Cancer Coalition’s (CCBCC) Reach to Recovery program shared her story of hope and strength with residents and staff at Hickory Village Memory Care as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
A 29-year breast cancer survivor, Putnam discussed the importance of self-breast exams and regular mammograms in an informative presentation at Hickory Village Memory Care.
Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984, Putnam was able to respond quickly and aggressively.
“At age 37, I was not aware of the need to check my breasts monthly or to have the doctor perform a clinical exam,” she said. “I certainly hadn’t given any thought to a mammogram.”
Working with the CCBCC and Catawba County Wig Bank, Putnam provides educational programs regarding early detection and support for cancer survivors as well as wigs and mastectomy garments for patients in need.
“I am grateful to be able to show others there can be a rich and productive life after breast cancer, no matter your gender, age, race or stage of cancer,” she said.
