Honoring America’s Heroes (Horizons)
November 21, 2013 (Canandaigua, NY) ─ On November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day, later to be known as Veterans Day. The day was to be marked with parades and public meetings and “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.”
Horizons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Canandaigua, recently celebrated its veterans and spouses of veterans during a poignant recognition ceremony. Certificates were presented to (pictured above) Horizons residents Richard Finnemore (Army), Brad Stanton (Air Force), Charles VanDeMar (Navy), Dan Troy (Air Force) and Paul Lang (Marines) along with help of veteran and volunteer Al Chapman (Navy).
Activities Director Curt Sanger also read from part of the memoirs of Annie Brodell, a Horizons resident who was living in occupied France during the war. Brodell spoke and thanked the men for their service.
“So many men and women of that generation served in so many different ways toward the war effort both in and outside of the service,” said Sanger. “Another wonderful way to recognize our residents for achievements they made, without them we would not be the country we are today.”
