Celebrating Local History (Woodcrest Commons)
July 28, 2014 (Henrietta, NY) ─ Residents at Woodcrest Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community, didn’t have to travel far to take a step back in time recently. The Village of Palmyra is celebrating its 225th birthday this year. Formerly known as the “Queen of Erie Canal towns,” Palmyra features an astonishing variety of architecture, ranging from the early 1800s to the Victorian-era.
Pictured here, Joanne Hackett, Kathy Hart and Roseanne Bourne explore Historic Palmyra during a recent visit to the village, including the old general store which was open from the late 1800s until 1940.
Residents visited Palmyra Historical Society and the Phelps General Store, two of the four museums in town, where they enjoyed browsing old antiques, some of which residents recalled from their own childhood, including an old grandfather clock from 1790 and a wedding dress from 1826.
“The residents and I decided we wanted to go back and live there,” said Activities Director Lindsay Lown. “The way everything was built, it was so solid and impressive.”
