Paying Tribute to America’s Heroes (Glenwell)
May 20, 2015 (Cheektowaga, NY) ─ As the nation prepares to commemorate those who have died while serving in the armed forces, Memorial Day also offers an opportunity to recognize and thank veterans who are part of our community today, such as Earl “Curly” Mayer, a former Naval Commander who served from 1967 to 1990. Mayer has been a resident of Glenwell, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Cheektowaga, for three years.
Mayer served as commanding officer aboard the USS Fulton from 1967 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. Over his military career, Mayer made stops in Memphis, New Orleans, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and Annapolis. Back in Buffalo, he was a member of various reserve units.
A kindhearted man who loves game shows and sports, Mayer was also longtime owner of Mayer Brothers, a five-generation cider making business. He’s a big Buffalo Bills fan and was an accomplished golfer in his day as well as a member of the Orchard Park and Craigburn Country Clubs.
“It is important to recognize veterans because they sacrificed their lives for us, in all branches of the armed forces and in many roles,” said Activities Director Scott Wieser. “We owe many of our freedoms to them. They deserve this day and so much more.”
