Senior Ball (Horizons)

June 22, 2015 (Canandaigua, NY) ─ Fish nets adorned with sea creatures, a life-size dock and a palm tree backdrop welcomed residents of Horizons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Canandaigua, and students from the Canandaigua Academy’s Key Club, a Kiwanis International High School Program, to “Under the Sea,” the theme of the third annual intergenerational Senior Ball.

Entertainers Cindy Kingsley and Jeff Clough provided the soundtrack to a perfect evening complete with star fish cookies and blue whale drinks.

“This is one of those activities that brings the biggest smiles to our residents’ faces, from dancing with the young men and ladies to singing old time tunes,” said Administrator Stacie Major. “The students are very outgoing and get those residents who normally don’t participate up on their feet and dancing!”

Members of the Canandaigua Academy Key Club, have been volunteering at Horizons for about four years, spending time with residents and delivered homemade Christmas cards during the holiday season. The Senior Ball is among the Key Club’s favorite volunteer opportunities all year long!

“At first they’re a little shy to go up and ask people to dance, but once they get out there they can’t help themselves,” said Canandaigua Academy Key Club Advisor Karen Brown. “The residents are so appreciative. They’ll compliment the students and thank them for coming. And the students want to know about the residents’ lives, their job and their families. It gives the kids an appreciation for everything they have in life and it’s a great feeling spending time giving back.”
