A Lesson in Kazoo History (Woodcrest Commons)
May 25, 2016 (Henrietta, NY) ─ Residents of Woodcrest Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Henrietta, recently visited one of the few remaining working museums in North America, the Original American Kazoo Company, established in Eden, New York in 1916. The museum highlights the instrument’s history and shows how kazoos are made step-by-step.
Pictured clockwise above, Woodcrest Commons residents Joanne Hackett and Tom Armstrong and Vroria Simpson check out kazoos of various shapes and sizes in a glass display case, John Hicks, Doug Kurlan, Tom Armstrong leave the Eden Kazoo Gift Shop after a fun day of history, and Armstrong and Simpson get a look at the inner workings of the Kazoo Factory.
The museum includes wooden, silver and gold kazoos, liquor-bottle shaped kazoos to celebrate the end of Prohibition, antique kazoo instruments, as well as a Make-Your-Own Kazoo station. Self-guided tours are available for free Monday through Saturday and visitors can view kazoos being made on the original equipment on weekdays until 3 p.m.
