Celebrating 100 Years Young! (Hickory Village Memory Care)
May 11, 2016 (Hickory, NC) ─ Margaret Baucom, an employee of the city of Hickory for over forty years, recently celebrated her 100th birthday amongst friends and family at Hickory Village Memory Care, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Hickory!
Born April 7, 1916 in Henry River, Margaret’s mother passed way when she was young, so she was raised by her aunts in Hickory and Granite Falls. After graduating from Granite Falls High School, she attended Lenoir Rhyne and graduated from King’s Business College. Upon graduation, she moved to Banner Elk where she served as secretary to the dean of Lees McRae College. There she met her future husband Clonnie Ivery Baucom. The two married in 1939 and their daughter Judy was born in 1945. The family resettled in Hickory in 1947 where Baucom worked for the City of Hickory as secretary and administrative assistant to the city manager, as well as town city clerk, before retiring after 45 years of service.
Baucom was recognized as a life member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hickory about five years ago. She served as Regent of the John Hoyle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for two terms and as president of the Hickory Chapter of the Altrusa Club. A life-long cat lover, she is the last of her eight living siblings. Her last sister died in 2014 at the age of 101!
