Three Cheers for Volunteers! (Greenbrier)
July 19, 2019 (Fairmont, NC) ─ When residents at Greenbrier, a DePaul Senior Living Community in Fairmont, take stock of their blessings, they count their dedicated volunteers twice.
“Fairmont is a small community,” said Greenbrier Administrator Sandi Griswold. “Having volunteers at Greenbrier helps keep our residents engaged and connected to the community.”
Pictured above are volunteers Minister Johnnie Johnson and Huel Faulk, along with Greenbrier resident Marvin Thompson. Huel Faulk has been coming to Greenbrier for several years. He grew attached to volunteering with residents with memory care issues when his late-mother was in an Alzhiemer’s unit.
“I saw the need of other people that just really wanted to go places and be associated with their churches and community,” he said.
At Greenbrier, Faulk is a “jack of all” in volunteering said Griswold.
“He is our barber, our gardening buddy and our candy supplier, just to name a few things,” said Griswold.
Faulk said he gets help from his wife, Jean Ann, who works to make cakes, pies and other treats which he brings in to share with residents.
“I care about what happens to other people,” he said. “Volunteering is inspiring. It just makes me feel good all over.”
Minister Johnnie Johnson, a retired school teacher and member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Marietta, has been volunteering at Greenbrier for about three years where she reads scriptures from the Bible and sings hymns together with residents.
“I felt led by the Lord to help others grow closer to the Lord, give them peace, happiness and better enjoyment of life,” she said.
